70th Anniversary of the Tauranga Repertory Society Stone Laying

On this day, 70 years ago, a significant milestone was achieved with the laying of this very stone in the building on 16th Avenue.  It stands as a testament to the countless hours of voluntary work performed by a now largely unknown team of Tauranga Repertory Society members. Their dedication and passion forged a path for the arts within our community, providing a permanent home for theatre in Tauranga.

Since that pivotal day, this theatre has operated continuously, and throughout the years, numerous dedicated individuals have offered their skills, talents, time and money to ensure that the vision of those original members lives on. Their efforts have allowed the Tauranga Repertory Society (trading as 16th Ave Theatre) to flourish, nurturing artistic endeavors and fostering a vibrant theatrical community.

The latest burst of activity, which involved repainting the exterior and renovating the downstairs dressing rooms, was instigated and managed to a large degree by Jack Visser. His leadership and commitment to this project has revitalized the space, ensuring it remains a welcoming and functional environment for future generations of performers and audiences alike.

As we commemorate this 70th anniversary, we honor the legacy of all those who have contributed to making the 16th Ave Theatre a place of culture and creativity. Their collective efforts have cultivated a rich history, and we look forward to many more years here in our much loved home as we continue to refurbish and modernise it, and doing what we love most - putting on productions.

Today, let us celebrate this remarkable milestone of 70 years in the building, and the many dedicated members of our theatre family, both past and present, as we now look forward to the 90th birthday of the society in 2026.
