Facelift for the Theatre to Celebrate 70th Anniversary of the Building

A Renovation Honouring Decades of Cultural Heritage

As the theatre approaches the 70th anniversary of moving to this site in 16th Avenue, plans are underway for a modest facelift that will rejuvenate our beloved theatre. The renovation project aims not only to preserve the theatre's rich history but also to modernize its facilities to enhance the experience for future generations.

Built 70 years ago, the theatre has been a cornerstone of the community, hosting countless performances, events, and gatherings over time.

16th Avenue Theatre is a non-profit charitable society run by dedicated volunteers since 1936, and so claims a place as one of the oldest continuously operating drama groups within New Zealand.  It is one of a few societies to have its own purpose-built theatre; constructed in 1954, the theatre has since become a familiar part of the local Tauranga community.

There have been many additions to the original building over the years, but it is quite some time since any major work has been done.    Over the decades, the theatre has seen illustrious performances ranging from local talent to visiting  artists, making it a vibrant hub for entertainment in the Avenues.

 Long Term Renovation Plan

The facelift is the first part of a multi-faceted approach to upgrade the theatre while respecting its historical essence.

The Dressing Room

The first part of the renovation process has been to refurbish the Dressing Room.  Painting, new carpet and a new kitchen unit and hot water system has been installed and the cast and crew of our upcoming production Nell Gwynn will be the first to enjoy this.   As funds allow, new  make-up mirrors and LED lighting will be installed, and heat pumps will replace the old heaters used to keep the cast warm and cosy while preparing to go on stage.

Painting the Roof and Exterior of the Building

If you drive past, you will see the scaffolding in place, and the painters have started work on the roof and building.    Keep an eye out for our bright new look, whilst maintaining the colours of branding.
